Even though The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered was released yesterday, Todd Howard’s studio doesn’t really see the developers of Skyblivion as competition.
Fan-made remakes of popular games have always been a risky proposition. You never know when someone will pour years into a passion project only to receive a demand letter from an expensive lawyer representing a faceless corporation, forcing the fan to either change it or stop development altogether. For Skyblivion, an ambitious, long-running effort to remake Oblivion using the Skyrim engine, this seemed like a real risk, especially after it was revealed that Bethesda was working on its own official Oblivion remaster.
Fortunately, in this case there is no need to fear a negative move from BGS, because instead of killing Skyblivion to protect their commercial interests, Bethesda has sent the key to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered to everyone working on Skyblivion: “Huge thanks to our friends at Bethesda Game Studios for their continued support of Skyblivion! As huge fans, we are beyond grateful for the generous gift of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered game keys for our entire modding team! It means so much to us. Thanks for everything, Bethesda! Bethesda has made it clear that they have no intention of shutting down our project,” the Skyblivion team wrote on Twitter.

Of course, one could argue that BGS threw the remastered game to the modders to keep them from finishing the project, but that doesn’t seem plausible in this case. Skyblivion recently spoke very highly of the Oblivion remaster, even though it might draw attention away from their own project. Modders have always been passionate about their mods and will remain so to the end.
Speaking of remasters, twelve hours after its release on Steam, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has already surpassed 150,000 concurrent players, more than double the peak of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition…
