MOVIE NEWS – Prime Video’s current number-one sci-fi movie is a blend of Alien and The Thing. Ash is winning over critics and dominating Amazon’s streaming charts—despite completely flopping at the box office. And yes, it’s only 90 minutes long.
Unlike Netflix’s rapid-fire release strategy, Prime Video moves at a slower pace, giving its titles room to breathe. The platform may have expected G20 to stay in the spotlight, but the surprise hit that took the top global spot is actually the indie sci-fi thriller Ash.
Premiering at SXSW, Ash hit U.S. theaters with little impact, grossing less than $1 million before vanishing from cinemas. Positive reviews—it’s currently at 73% on Rotten Tomatoes—and the presence of Eiza González (recently seen in The 3-Body Problem) weren’t enough to draw theatergoers at the time.
“Crazy and psychedelic”
Often compared to classics like Alien and The Thing, Ash clearly doesn’t reach their heights. Still, director Flying Lotus crafted a visually arresting film that adds depth to the story of Riya, an astronaut who awakens on a space station suffering from amnesia—only to find the rest of the crew dead.
With a lean runtime of just 90 minutes, Ash has been described by Bloody Disgusting’s Meagan Navarro as “the film equivalent of an ultra-violent space survival horror video game”, while Indiewire’s Katie Rife calls it “a crazed, psychedelic sci-fi thriller you don’t watch—you experience”.
Prime Video released Ash globally on Thursday, April 24, and it didn’t take long for the movie to climb to the top. According to Flixpatrol, the film is currently number one worldwide on Amazon’s platform and holds the top spot in 19 different countries.
