Ara History Untold Strikes Back: This Strategy Game Has Civilization 7 in Its Crosshairs

Now available on Game Pass, the historical strategy title Ara History Untold is going all-in to win over players frustrated by Civilization 7, firing off wave after wave of new content. With a new developer stepping in, the game is headed for a complete revamp starting in May.

Launched in September 2024, Ara History Untold had the bad luck of arriving right when the hype around Civilization 7 was peaking. The excitement surrounding Firaxis’ iconic series drowned out any attention for Oxide Studios’ ambitious historical 4X title, no matter how strong it was. But time has shifted perceptions—especially after Civilization’s underwhelming reception—and players have begun to take notice of Ara. In response, the developers have accelerated production, pushing out new content to elevate the game to direct-competitor status.

From May Onward, Expect a Flood of Updates

After an initial development phase led by Oxide Studios, the task of expanding Ara History Untold has moved to Stardock—the team best known for Sins of a Solar Empire. And their work is already showing results: May will bring a new Earth map, smarter AI, improved combat, better overall performance, and a variety of balance tweaks. In June, players can expect a major diplomatic and economic systems overhaul, plus the Unreleased Scenarios DLC, which adds more maps, events, and technologies.

The momentum won’t stop there. Later this summer, a complete design update will introduce a revamped warfare system and a new influence mechanic, giving players even more tactical depth. All signs suggest the developers are determined to establish Ara as a vibrant, evolving force in the world of historical strategy games.

With a steady flow of content and a refreshingly flexible take on the 4X genre, Ara History Untold has a real shot at a comeback. Already available on Steam and PC Game Pass, it’s the perfect time to try a game that was once overlooked—but may now be ready to redefine turn-based strategy.
