Dark Souls 3 Boss Randomly Appears in Spanish News Report on the Next Pope

Dark Souls 3 made a surprise cameo in two Spanish news broadcasts when one of its bosses, *Pontiff Sulyvahn*, was featured in a segment about papal candidates. Cuatro and Telecinco unexpectedly showcased a clip of the character during a report about the Conclave.

Right now, global attention is focused on the Conclave – the Catholic Church’s closed-door meeting to elect a new pope following the death of *Pope Francis* on April 21. Over the past few days, media outlets across the world have been reviewing the top contenders for the papacy. But two Spanish TV channels decided to spice things up by including a brief gameplay segment from Dark Souls 3.

Cuatro and Telecinco – via DoomGuy_20 on Reddit and misssalandit on X – aired a segment about a simple mobile app that allows users to predict who will become the next pope in Rome. Strangely enough, this “fantasy football-style” papal pool was introduced in both news broadcasts with a few seconds of Dark Souls 3 footage. Specifically, an avatar dressed in papal robes is seen battling *Pontiff Sulyvahn*.

As expected, social media quickly noticed the odd inclusion. The broadcasters presented the report by suggesting that the app designed for selecting the next Pope was far simpler than one might expect from a digital experience. “If we imagined the Conclave with a video game aesthetic, it could look like this battle for St. Peter’s throne,” said Cuatro, accompanied by the aforementioned Dark Souls 3 footage. “Or something like that, much less sophisticated,” the report continued, now showing images of the actual app.

Cuatro and Telecinco belong to Mediaset España

It’s already unusual for one news network to illustrate a religious topic using a FromSoftware title, but for two channels to do the same is downright bizarre. The reason might be straightforward: Cuatro and Telecinco are both owned by Mediaset España. It’s likely that the editorial team reused the same footage across both broadcasts, resulting in this unexpectedly surreal TV moment.
