The Penguin Won’t Return – HBO Confirms the Spin-Off Ends with One Season

MOVIE NEWS – Warner Bros. and HBO have crushed the hopes of Batman fans waiting to see more of The Penguin. The spin-off series won’t be renewed for a second season. That doesn’t mean the character is gone for good, though.

If you were still holding out hope for more episodes of The Penguin, you’re out of luck. HBO officially confirmed the show is done by submitting it as a limited series at the Emmys, signaling no new content is in development. The premium network and Max streaming platform are no longer planning any continuation for the dark Gotham-set thriller.

No cliffhangers, but a future elsewhere?

To be fair, The Penguin had a fairly complete story arc. It didn’t end on any nail-biting cliffhangers that would necessitate a sequel. Whatever loose threads remain could easily be tied up in The Batman: Part II, Matt Reeves’ long-awaited follow-up starring Robert Pattinson. That movie has yet to enter production and is now scheduled for an October 2027 release after multiple delays.

Despite this, the show was a major success: its premiere drew nearly 17 million viewers in the U.S. alone, rivaling numbers posted by House of the Dragon and The Last of Us. Critics and audiences alike praised the series, which led many to assume a second season would be greenlit. No such luck — and no official explanation has been provided for why the story ends here.

Perhaps Matt Reeves and DC Studios are more interested in exploring other narratives within their Batman-based criminal world. Two previously rumored spin-offs — one focused on Gotham PD, the other on Arkham Asylum — were already scrapped. It’s unclear if these concepts might be revived later.

Meanwhile, HBO Max will launch season two of Peacemaker starring John Cena on August 21, while the new Superman film lands in theaters on July 11. These projects are part of the new DCU, unlike The Penguin and The Batman, which exist in a separate continuity with no crossover plans on the horizon.
