How to Train Your Dragon Director Hopes Both Versions Can Coexist in Peace

MOVIE NEWS – For many, the original 2010 animated How to Train Your Dragon is more than just a movie — it’s part of their childhood. So it’s no surprise that the live-action remake has sparked a mix of curiosity and concern. But Dean DeBlois believes there’s room for both.

When news broke that a live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon was in the works, reactions ranged from excitement to worry. And while big-budget remakes often draw fire, this one comes with a reassuring detail: it’s being directed and written by Dean DeBlois, the creative mind behind the original film.

Of course, there will be people who say, ‘You shouldn’t have touched this. You ruined my childhood memories,’” DeBlois told SFX magazine. “That’s part of the territory. But I’ve always approached the story with love and respect. My goal was to enhance it and bring out more, and I truly hope that both versions can live alongside each other in harmony.”

The director sees the new format as an opportunity to explore core themes — growing up, loyalty, friendship, sacrifice — in greater depth, while also tapping into a darker, more mature tone. Visually, he’s aiming for a distinct new look that makes use of live-action’s unique strengths, rather than trying to replicate the animated style.
