If someone had told you a decade ago that an open-world RPG based on Game of Thrones would launch to silence, you’d laugh—yet that’s exactly what happened. Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is now available on Steam, Android, and iOS, but it’s hardly made the impact fans expected.
Despite massive anticipation and the legendary status of George R. R. Martin’s universe, Game of Thrones: Kingsroad has debuted with barely a ripple. Originally hyped as the first open-world RPG set in Westeros, the game has failed to deliver the epic experience many envisioned, and its launch has been met with muted reactions.
Offering a blend of territory control, political scheming, and RPG-style combat, Kingsroad looked promising on paper. Yet its Steam debut was met with mixed feedback. Players criticized poor optimization, a confusing interface, and uninspired gameplay. Even die-hard fans expressed disappointment, though mobile users appear to be more forgiving.
Mobile Finds Success Where PC Falters
While the game holds a 62% positive rating on Steam, it’s been better received on mobile. On Android, it’s already surpassed one million downloads with generally favorable reviews, and on iOS, it currently ranks number one among RPGs. The fact that it’s free to play and only requires 3 GB may explain its popularity on phones, but that hasn’t translated to PC.
The Steam launch has been sluggish, with disappointing player activity. Official numbers for mobile remain unknown, but PC analytics show just 5,736 concurrent players last night — a dismal figure for a game under such a well-known brand. The lack of a strong player base makes it difficult to engage in multiplayer and form alliances, which are core to the game’s premise.
The developers have acknowledged the feedback and promised future updates, but no concrete plans have been revealed yet. Sadly, the damage may already be done. Game of Thrones: Kingsroad entered a crowded market with a powerful name and fell short, and now it must work overtime to win back skeptical players who feel the throne is already lost.
