Rumour: Will AMD and Samsung Power the Next PlayStation Handheld? – Leaked Details Tease a New Era for Sony Gamers

HANDHELD NEWS – Sony is reportedly developing a new handheld device powered by its own custom chip, combining AMD and Samsung’s latest technologies for a potential PlayStation Vita successor.

Rumors suggest Sony is hard at work on an “in-house” chip project that would drive its next portable PlayStation hardware. While the PlayStation Portal isn’t a true handheld, it signaled Sony’s renewed interest in the market beyond traditional consoles. Industry insider Jukanlosreve claims Sony’s next portable will feature a proprietary system-on-a-chip (SoC).

The chip may once again involve AMD, the company behind the PlayStation 4/Xbox One and PlayStation 5/Xbox Series hardware. Reports indicate this SoC could be produced on Samsung’s cutting-edge SF2P 2nm process, an impressive technological leap. However, it’s worth noting that Sony has juggled several in-house projects in the past that ultimately never launched.

Insiders claim this handheld could be a miniature PlayStation 5. However, it won’t natively run PS5 games—instead, it’ll require scaled-down titles, similar to Nintendo’s model. If true, this device would be the true successor to the PlayStation Vita. A custom SoC makes sense, letting Sony tune for ideal performance-per-watt, while AMD’s APU experience is a natural fit for high-powered handhelds.

These rumors aren’t far-fetched. Samsung’s next-gen 2nm manufacturing is a major step forward, but only time will tell if it truly makes the cut. For now, early industry chatter suggests the South Korean tech giant has made big strides with its new node. Still, don’t expect to see this PlayStation handheld in stores before 2028—the wait continues for fans.
