DOOM: The Dark Ages: Has an Enemy Type Changed Too Much?

Fans say that id Software has redesigned one of the enemy types too much in the latest installment of the DOOM franchise.

Over the years, DOOM has redesigned quite a few iconic and formidable enemies. The Cacodemon, Imp, and Cyberdemon are popular enemies that have stood the test of time. Another classic that has appeared in all the more recent games is the Baron of Hell, though he has undergone a makeover in each of the last three games.

In 2016’s DOOM, he looked similar to the original design. In DOOM Eternal, it had a slightly more hellish aesthetic with flaming claws and a grayish hue. DOOM: The Dark Ages also redesigned it, featuring the most drastic change yet with an almost complete departure from the classic Baron of Hell look. The change is so drastic that the topic recently popped up on the franchise’s subreddit.

Some called the redesign disgusting and wished his horns hadn’t been removed. This does not seem to be an unpopular opinion. The public sees it as somewhat resembling women’s underwear. She has been the subject of several nicknames, such as “Cosmic Bussy” and “Zombgina.” Other than the offensive nicknames, the audience admitted that they didn’t really recognize her and that she reminded them more of the Shambler seen in Quake.

Some said that it lost its original Doom feel and became instantly less recognizable as a result. Considering that people didn’t even know she was going to be the Baron of Hell in the game, they might be right. Some would have preferred to see the Baron in the 2016 or 2020 game. There might be an opportunity for the older style to appear if the game gets DLC. Since DOOM Eternal received DLC, there’s a chance. However, if sales aren’t strong enough, don’t count on it.
