Tom Cruise’s Big Favor – How He Fired an Actress So She Could Star in Another Film

MOVIE NEWS – “She’s an incredible human being.” Tom Cruise let her go from a sci-fi movie, and she went on to win Best Actress awards that same year. The superstar sacrificed an important member of the Oblivion cast for Jessica Chastain’s dream role – and she’s never forgotten it.

Oblivion is a film where Tom Cruise’s character navigates a desolate Earth after a devastating cataclysm, joined by Olga Kurylenko (Thunderbolts). But originally, this role was meant for Jessica Chastain.

The star of Interstellar and The Martian had already signed on to play Julia, but then she got a call from renowned director Kathryn Bigelow. Chastain recounted the dilemma: “Contractually, I was supposed to do Oblivion and I was excited about it, but when I read the script for this other film, I knew right away I wanted the role.” Her agents moved quickly to sort it out, but it was Tom Cruise who stepped in to make it happen – even if it meant losing an important part of Joseph Kosinski’s film.

“And with your support, I was able to make this film.”

“Someone from my agency contacted him and said, ‘Look, she wants to work with you, but there’s another film she really wants to do.’” Chastain recalled. “And with his support, I was able to make this film. He’s an incredible person.” The film she’s referring to is Zero Dark Thirty, which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in 2012 after she took home the Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice awards for her role.

None of it would have happened without Tom Cruise’s generosity, once again proving himself to be a fantastic co-star and friend. Chastain hasn’t worked with him since, but maybe one day they’ll reunite – both actors are sci-fi veterans, and fans would love to see Cruise return to the genre.

For her part, Olga Kurylenko did a great job in Oblivion, even if her character wasn’t the film’s strongest point. If you’re curious, you can catch it tonight or on HBO Max – the film follows a drone technician on a post-apocalyptic Earth who begins to question his reality and mission when he rescues a mysterious woman from a crashed spaceship. No spoilers here – just check it out!
