70,000+ Fans Fight Back as Amazon Cancels The Wheel of Time

MOVIE NEWS – hg“It’s better than The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.” More than 70,000 people are pushing back against Prime Video’s latest fantasy cancellation, going straight for the heart of Amazon. The Wheel of Time fans open a portal of resistance, reminding everyone that their beloved show has received better reviews than Amazon’s Lord of the Rings prequel.

Just a few days ago, the news hit like a bombshell: Amazon had decided to cancel The Wheel of Time only weeks after the third season’s grand finale. Fans were shocked and wasted no time rallying to try and save the fantasy epic. They quickly launched a petition online, highlighting that their favorite drama has earned better ratings than other shows in the same genre, including Amazon’s own The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Focusing only on the final seasons of these major fantasy productions, The Wheel of Time fans shared a chart showing that the series has better reviews and audience scores than House of the Dragon (Season 2), The Witcher (Season 3), and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (Season 2). This might not sound like a massive achievement, considering how heavily criticized these shows have been, but sometimes quality alone isn’t enough to prevent a show from getting the axe—especially when the first two seasons had a $200 million budget that can only be sustained with huge viewership numbers.

Renewal or Another Platform?

In the past, social media campaigns have helped rescue shows from premature cancellation. Prime Video itself saved The Expanse after SyFy ran out of room, turning it into one of Amazon’s biggest hits. Now, fans of The Wheel of Time hope to do something similar, flexing their collective power for Amazon—or any other streaming service that’s looking for a solid fantasy series to bolster its lineup.

So far, 71,000 people have signed the petition—a more modest figure than the 250,000 who demanded Netflix fire The Witcher’s writers after Henry Cavill’s departure. The Wheel of Time is produced by Sony Pictures Television, which theoretically means there’s no reason why another studio couldn’t pick it up and keep the story alive.

The catch? The original plan was to adapt all 14 of Robert Jordan’s novels (completed by Brandon Sanderson) over the course of eight seasons. That’s a very ambitious vision in an era when most series struggle to survive past three seasons—especially something of this scale.

Still, the effort is what counts. In the meantime, both seasons of The Wheel of Time are available in full on Prime Video—the same home as the critically acclaimed (and even pricier) The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which was renewed for a third season just a few months ago.
