After 11 years, one of Bethesda’s most acclaimed fantasy MMORPGs is about to hit a turning point: The Elder Scrolls Online will finally push its story beyond the events of the base game. Developed by Zenimax Online, the game is poised for its biggest narrative leap yet.
A seismic shift is coming to The Elder Scrolls Online. While fans know Zenimax and Bethesda have ditched yearly expansions in favor of shorter, more frequent seasons, there’s an even bigger change coming: for the first time, the story will advance past the core game’s timeline.
Jason Barnes, head of localization, made it official at a special preview attended by GamesRadar+. “For the first time in ESO’s history, as far as I’m aware, we’re actually progressing the timeline. The story is finally moving forward,” Barnes revealed. “We’re essentially saying: the events of the base game—the Planemeld of Molag Bal—are in the past. Molag Bal has been defeated, the Planemeld is finished, and the world is starting to heal.”
This is a major leap for The Elder Scrolls Online. The Seasons of the Cult of the Worm have just landed, alongside the first major content update that officially closes out the original narrative arc. For the first time, players can dive into a new storyline that builds on everything that’s come before.
Progress Doesn’t Mean Losing the Past
Worried that this leap forward will erase everything that’s come before? Not a chance. At the event, Barnes stressed that all existing content will remain intact—players will still be able to explore past chapters at will, even as they jump into the new Cult of the Worm seasons and discover fresh adventures in Tamriel.
