It’s about time—Resident Evil Village launched over four years ago, and fans have been waiting ever since.

The Resident Evil series has been kept alive through a mix of remakes and new titles. The most recent was the Resident Evil 4 Remake, released two years ago. Before that, we saw the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes, all while the storyline of Ethan Winters, the protagonist of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Village, came to a close. So what’s next for the franchise? While there’s no official word yet, insider Dusk Golem has sparked fresh speculation on Twitter:

“Again, I can’t give 100% confirmation. No one has told me directly or anything like that. But, at this point, I’m 95% sure that Resident Evil 9 will be revealed at Summer Game Fest. There’s a lot of buzz behind the scenes for the first time, lots of rumblings, and the kind of activity that usually signals a new Resident Evil game is about to be announced. Add to that the fact that Capcom’s Resident Evil social media accounts seem to be getting more active suddenly and Andi from Screenfire Germany’s claim—I trust him—and I’d say that if you’re tuning into Summer Game Fest on June 6 hoping to see Resident Evil 9, there’s an incredibly high chance you won’t be disappointed. I’m getting into hype mode for it myself,” wrote Dusk Golem.

Years of development, a changed direction

Resident Evil 9 has reportedly been in development for several years and gone through multiple iterations. Development first began in 2017 as an open-world multiplayer title, a complete contrast to Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, which had underwhelming market performance at the time. In 2021, the project was rebooted and most of its original ideas scrapped. However, some concepts survived—including Leon returning as the main character.

This year’s Summer Game Fest, where the game is expected to be unveiled, takes place on June 6, 2025.
