[SOP 2025] Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow: The Franchise Goes VR for the First Time! [VIDEO]

Maze Theory, in partnership with Eidos Montréal and under Vertigo Games, is bringing Thief into virtual reality.

The City is a place of shadows, where the powerful rule and the oppressed live in fear. Its rooftops form a labyrinth above narrow, winding streets. The City Watch patrols relentlessly, enforcing the iron will of Baron Ulysses Northcrest—a tyrant crushing rebellion before it can take root. You are Magpie, a clever orphaned thief shaped by the streets, stealing to survive—until you discover a legendary artifact with a legacy from the past. Use immersive virtual reality mechanics to steal, evade, and outsmart the forces controlling the city. Uncover its darkest secrets and expose a sinister conspiracy threatening its very foundation.

Experience Thief’s world in VR for the first time, blending classic stealth gameplay with next-gen immersion. Use your body to sneak past guards, your hands to pickpocket, pry open hidden compartments, and unlock doors with tactile interactions. Wield a variety of arrows and tools to distract, disable, or eliminate threats, shooting from your bow while climbing rooftops, sneaking through back alleys, and uncovering secrets in a dark, steampunk-inspired world. Every heist offers multiple paths and playstyles—whether you slip by guards unseen or strike from the shadows.

“We wanted to create a VR experience where players don’t just play a thief—they become one. It’s an honor to work with Eidos Montréal and Maze Theory on such an iconic franchise and bring it to life in a way never done before. This level of immersive storytelling and interactivity is what we believe will define the future of the medium,” wrote Vertigo Games CEO Richard Stitselaar in the press release. “Thief has always been about mastering the shadows, using tools and wits to navigate its dark and dangerous world. Whether you’re sneaking or going direct with arrows and blackjack, it’s a world full of intrigue. Seeing it reimagined in VR brings a whole new depth to Thief’s atmosphere, and we can’t wait for fans old and new to experience it,” added Steven Gallagher, creative director at Eidos Montréal. “It was tough keeping this game in the shadows—literally. We’ve been in full stealth mode, but now it’s time to step into the light and finally reveal Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow. The team worked tirelessly to stay true to the series’ spirit and deliver immersion like never before. This is what stealth feels like when you are the thief,” said Maze Theory CEO Phil White.

Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow is set to release this year for PlayStation VR2, SteamVR, Meta Quest 3, and Meta Quest 2.
