From phone to drone: Red Bull Tetris rewrites gaming history in the skies of Dubai

June 6th is World Tetris Day, and on this occasion, the iconic puzzle game is now rising to new heights: the Red Bull Tetris global gaming competition begins with the qualifiers. Anyone over the age of 18 can enter – no matter what level they play. However, only the best will qualify for the global world finals in December, which will be held in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. The final showdown will feature over 2,000 drones bringing the legendary game to life under the desert sky, making it the first live Tetris game in history at the iconic Dubai Frame.

With over 520 million copies sold, Tetris is a legendary video game that has been played by millions around the world for over 40 years. Red Bull Tetris, however, puts a twist on the classic gameplay by changing the playing field, introducing the unique Golden Tetrimino and rapid, time-limited rounds. The gameplay is made more dynamic by gravity and speed changes, so each game presents fans with new experiences – and the qualifiers will begin on June 6, 2025.

Registration for the Hungarian qualifiers is now open, and participants from more than 55 countries can also test their skills on mobile to fight for the best ranking places in their country. The players with the highest scores can now compete in person on PC, in a 1v1 format, in the national finals to decide who will be there for the final competition in Dubai. Versatility is essential in this unique, cross-platform format.

“Tetris has been bringing people together for over forty years, connecting across generations through its timeless gameplay. Partnering with Red Bull and launching this global competition is an exciting chapter for us – celebrating the energy, creativity and community that have inspired our brand. At Tetris, our passion is to enhance the gaming experience, and this tournament is another significant step in sharing the joy of Tetris with the world.” – said Maya Rogers, President and CEO of Tetris Company, regarding the competition.

The best competitor in Hungary can prepare for the world’s largest Tetris tournament: the best Tetris players from all over the world will meet in Dubai between December 11-13 in the Red Bull Tetris World Finals. The event will not only feature Tetris, but the national champions will spend three unforgettable days in the desert and the city, attending concerts and meeting special guests during the immersive experience. Before the main event, participants will compete in a ranking competition to qualify for the grand final, where they will compete in intense 1v1 duels. On December 13, the final will take place live in the sky with the help of more than 2,000 coordinated drones and the captivating view of the Dubai Frame.
