Is Sony Planning to Acquire Parts of Warner Bros. Discovery?

According to rumors, Sony is targeting Warner Bros. Discovery’s (WBD) streaming segment and certain game development studios.

Earlier this month, Warner Bros. Discovery announced that it will split into two units by mid-2026. WBD Global Networks will continue to focus on traditional cable programming, including sports, news, and entertainment. WBD Streaming and Studios will spin off the company’s TV series and film production and gaming divisions, along with HBO. Many analysts view the potential sale of the latter, more successful division as the motive behind the split. Now, just a few days after the announcement, SEScoops, a website dedicated mainly to wrestling, has reported that Sony is considering buying WBD Streaming and Studios.

This would make perfect strategic sense for Sony. It would significantly strengthen its film, TV series, and game production, as well as give it access to some of the entertainment industry’s most valuable intellectual properties, such as the DC Universe, the Harry Potter franchise, and Game of Thrones. However, the separation must happen first. If a takeover deal is agreed upon, it may not be announced until around 2027. WBD has suffered heavy losses in its gaming division. Despite the massive success of Hogwarts Legacy, several other games have failed, including Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Gotham Knights, and MultiVersus. Additionally, Monolith recently closed, and their original Wonder Woman game was canceled.

Recently, we learned that Warner Bros. Games is restructuring four of its key IPs: Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, DC, and Mortal Kombat. It’s difficult to predict whether the Sony acquisition would significantly impact this division’s situation. However, gamers probably shouldn’t worry too much about these games becoming PlayStation exclusives because they are simply too popular.

After all, Sony realized this when they allowed Bungie to continue developing for multiple platforms (although the Marathon reboot doesn’t look promising; we wrote about that the other day).
