Paradox, the game’s publisher, has confirmed layoffs at The Chinese Room, though they claim the game itself will not be affected.
The Chinese Room, the developer of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, has been hit by layoffs, according to confirmation from Paradox Interactive. While the exact number of staff affected remains unclear, Paradox insists that the long-anticipated sequel is “unaffected” by the cuts.
Initial reports came via LinkedIn from former employees who announced their dismissals. As noted by Game Developer, one ex-employee wrote: “No one is safe when the axe starts swinging.” At least nine former team members have confirmed they were let go, but the total scope is still unknown.
Following the LinkedIn posts and coverage by Game Developer, Paradox released a statement to PCGamer: “Development on Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 is unaffected by the recent staffing changes at The Chinese Room. The game is still scheduled for an October release. We wish those affected the best of luck in their future endeavors.”
It’s no secret that Bloodlines 2 has had a troubled production history. Announced in 2019, the title was nearly canceled once while under development at Hardsuit Labs. Paradox eventually removed the project from Hardsuit and handed it over to The Chinese Room in 2021, which has been working on it alongside its own titles like Still Wakes the Deep.
These layoffs are just the latest chapter in Bloodlines 2’s tumultuous development. Earlier this year, Paradox reaffirmed that the game is due in October, although a precise release date is still pending. According to the publisher, the game is finished and currently undergoing bug fixing and polish. After so much delay, fans will be watching closely to see the final result.
