Outriders 2 Was Quietly Canceled — Here’s Why It Never Stood a Chance

People Can Fly hasn’t been having the smoothest ride lately, and now we know for sure that the long-rumored sequel to Outriders was one of the projects that got axed this year — long before it could have taken shape.

Outriders 2 was one of two internal projects canceled by People Can Fly in 2024. As first reported by TheThumbWars and later confirmed by Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming, the project—codenamed Project Gemini—was indeed a planned follow-up to the original Outriders.

Unfortunately, the development was in its infancy. According to reports that reviewed images and video footage, the game had only reached the motion capture stage by early 2025. That means production was still years away from delivering a finished product.

People Can Fly CEO Sebastian Wojciechowski confirmed last month that Project Gemini had been suspended. The reason? Square Enix, the project’s publisher, failed to provide a supplemental contract outlining key development milestones and didn’t communicate any concrete commitment to continue or terminate the work. In other words, Square Enix simply backed out without ceremony, leaving the developers stranded.

Alongside Outriders 2, another internal title called Project Bifrost was also canceled. However, People Can Fly still has other projects in development. These don’t include the Painkiller remake, despite the studio’s connection to the original. Instead, the Polish team is collaborating with Epic Games on titles like Bulletstorm, Gears of War: Judgment, and Fortnite: Save the World. Most notably, they’re now working on Gears of War: E-Day together with The Coalition.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
