TECH NEWS – Stealth, action, and pure Italian style: Mafia: The Old Country’s latest gameplay drop dives deeper than ever into the mafia’s roots – not in the U.S., but in southern Italy, before the rise of American gangsters.
IGN has released nine minutes of gameplay footage from Mafia: The Old Country, giving fans a real taste of the upcoming prequel. The protagonist, Enzo, is tasked with a dangerous mission: bring back one of Don Salieri’s enemies alive. The mission starts with a cinematic cutscene where Enzo gets orders straight from Don Salieri – a chance to prove himself to the family. After that, Enzo heads to a safehouse to gear up for what the family calls their “vermin problem.” Once he’s prepped, players speed through the Italian countryside to the target’s home.
When Enzo arrives, he must use stealth before things erupt into a firefight with the guards – the perfect showcase for Mafia: The Old Country’s third-person combat. As Enzo reaches his target, the scene fades out just before he knocks the man out. While Hangar 13 has edited the footage to keep some secrets, this is still the most extensive look at gameplay since 2K and Hangar 13 started showing off the game earlier this year. This isn’t Mafia 4 – think of it as Mafia 0, set in southern Italy before the classic American saga.
According to 2K and Hangar 13, Mafia: The Old Country went gold in June, meaning physical copies are already being pressed. Of course, the team is still polishing ahead of launch. The studio promises this will be the best-looking Mafia ever when it lands on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC on August 8.
