“It may seem obvious, but Nintendo has now truly rolled out a master plan for the Switch 2 that could address one of the biggest ‘diseases’ of the games industry.” The company’s president says the answer to rising costs is to reduce development times.
With the launch of new Nintendo hardware this June, the company faces a big challenge: game development costs keep rising, even as Nintendo puts gameplay and innovation above visual realism. President Shuntaro Furukawa explained to investors that “projects have gotten larger and longer, which has made costs rise dramatically,” putting more risk on the industry as a whole.
To counter this, Nintendo is looking at ways to keep quality high but reduce spending. Furukawa said, “We think it’s possible to develop some software in shorter cycles while still offering consumers something new.” So expect to see smaller, fresher games in the lineup—like Switch 2 Welcome Tour or Drag x Drive—alongside big blockbusters.
Nintendo szerint túl drága lehet a Switch 2, ezért kell az új stratégia
This strategy also aims to make the Switch 2’s high price less of a problem. Investors raised concerns that the new console’s cost could be a barrier for younger gamers, so it’s crucial to have affordable, appealing games available from day one.
Nintendo is trying to balance major, hardware-intensive releases with smaller, faster projects, to keep the business model sustainable and the company’s creativity intact for the future.
