MOVIE NEWS – After a long two-year hiatus, the wait is over. Apple TV+’s sci-fi spectacle, Foundation, finally returns this Friday with its epic third season—and, if early buzz is anything to go by, it’s every bit as jaw-dropping as you remember. With Jared Harris, Lee Pace, Lou Llobell, and Leah Harvey leading the cast, this new chapter of Isaac Asimov’s iconic saga has already landed a 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, making now the perfect time to binge from the very beginning if you haven’t already.
Hailed as a “stunning, sweeping and cerebral space odyssey” by James Dyer of Empire Magazine, Foundation follows a ragtag group of exiles in their epic quest to rescue humanity and rebuild civilization as the Galactic Empire crumbles. The show’s heady, hard sci-fi themes might be a brain workout at times, but Cheryl Eddy of io9 highlights that showrunners David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman know exactly when to let you breathe:
“It’s wildly entertaining—thanks to its writing, layered world-building, and performances—and while it’s a show that deals with very serious themes, Foundation also knows when to lighten up.”
While Foundation isn’t afraid to take liberties with Asimov’s source material, it’s still every bit as compelling as the award-winning novels, modernized for a new era. The original stories first hit the page in 1941, and a lot has changed. The show highlights that evolution by giving characters like Harris’ Hari Seldon more emotional depth than ever before, adding layers even Asimov never imagined.
‘Foundation’ Is the Game of Thrones of Space
Jamie Parker of CBR calls it “one of the best shows of the year and a must-watch show for all sci-fi fans”. Foundation Season 3 premieres on Apple TV+ this Friday, July 11, with nine more episodes dropping weekly through September 12. Therese Lacson at Collider raves, “After three seasons, it’s fair to say the Apple TV+ series from David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman has done the impossible in creating something that is not only engaging but holds to the soul of what Asimov’s story is all about.”
“If you’ve been on the ride thus far, there’s no reason to jump off now,” writes Jean Henegan of Pop Culture Maniacs, while John DeVore at AV Club observes that “the stakes are high this season”—not that this should shock longtime fans, since “Foundation has no chill setting, which can be viewed as the show’s weakness and also its strength.”
Ryan Britt of Inverse sums it up best: “If there are any holdouts on whether or not Foundation is the true Game of Thrones in space, Season 3 will convince you that this epic show deserves an audience bigger than just people clutching their Isaac Asimov paperbacks to their chests.”
Season 3 of Foundation lands this Friday, but if you haven’t started the sci-fi juggernaut yet, the first two seasons are waiting for you right now.
