While Fellowship Entertainment (formerly Embracer Group) is trying to dig itself out of the hole it created, the remake announced six years ago (!!!) still hasn’t been released—which is a bit of a running joke at this point.
This August brings the next THQ Nordic Showcase, where we’ll surely see a ton of games, many of which were last shown a year ago. Ahead of the event, Alkimia Interactive released its latest Making Of video, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the Gothic Remake and focusing on the studio’s approach to the game’s art direction.
Reinhard Pollice, studio head and game director at Alkimia Interactive, explained that they decided very early on not to simply create an HD version of the original art style, because that wasn’t their goal. Pollice and art director Daniel Candil went on to detail how, during development, they worked with opposing forces—wanting the game to feel grounded and realistic while also capturing Gothic’s more fantastic and magical elements.
Gothic Remake was announced in 2019, when a surprise teaser demo was released for players. It was only in 2020 that development was confirmed, and since then, Alkimia Interactive has continued working on the game. In May 2024, we heard that the remake is tentatively set for a March 2025 release, but so far this year, the only update has been a new demo that debuted at the first Steam Next Fest of the year back in February. Alkimia Interactive even took player feedback from that demo into account and has made several major changes since.
There’s still no exact release date for the Gothic Remake, but THQ Nordic’s August show might finally reveal when the game is actually coming—since that’s what the publisher usually uses these events for. And you can bet that most of last year’s announced games will make another appearance here.
