Perhaps this is an effective way to prevent cheaters from attempting such tactics again.
“We took legal action against two people who cheated and broke our rules. One sold and used cheats, while the other carried out cyberattacks (i.e., DDoS attacks) on content creators who were livestreaming gameplay. Both have been ordered to stop these activities and have been banned from playing Fortnite. If you break the rules, there are consequences,” Epic said in a statement.
The first apology came from Mirrored, a cheat seller: “I would like to apologize to the Fortnite community for cheating in Fortnite tournaments, as well as selling and distributing cheats and hardware that enabled others to cheat. I violated Epic’s rules, and they have taken legal action against me. I am banned from playing Fortnite forever, and I will face legal action if I sell or distribute cheats again,” they wrote in a message posted to YouTube. The second apology was made in a YouTube video:
“Hi everyone, it’s Zebsi here. I recently carried out distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks in Fortnite under the username TTV Humpty.LLC. These attacks impacted Fortnite matches of streamers, as well as other users involved in those matches. I am sorry for the attacks and the harm and damage they caused to the streamers, other players, and Epic Games, the operators of Fortnite. My accounts have been banned from Fortnite. I regret my actions and will not be involved in any more DDoS attacks,” the second apology said.
The punishment could be much worse. Most lawsuits of this kind end with the defendant owing a large sum to a faceless company that doesn’t need the money but wants to make a point. Although Epic did not specify whether it was seeking a monetary penalty against this couple, it may have been. In February, when Epic Games forced Fortnite cheater RepulseGod to publicly resign, the company also demanded that he pay back his fraudulently obtained winnings. Epic Games then donated those funds to charity.
It’s not a pretty sight to ruin someone’s life because they were an idiot in a game, especially when the company doing the ruining is one of the world’s most popular video game makers. However, it’s classy when Epic wipes cheaters’ noses in figurative dung.
