Only True Fans Know: Zelda’s New Princess Was a Final Fantasy Heroine First!

MOVIES NEWS – If you recognized the actress playing Zelda, congratulations—you might just be the world’s biggest Final Fantasy fan. Bo Bragason, the new Princess Zelda, actually stepped into the shoes of a video game princess years ago. But only the most diehard Final Fantasy fans ever noticed.

With the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie finally revealed, Nintendo and Sony Pictures are gradually spilling the secrets behind this ambitious project. We already know it’s set to hit theaters on May 7, 2027, directed by Wes Ball (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes), with Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Zelda herself.

But here’s what flew under the radar: despite her young age, Bragason already has big-screen video game experience—a fact so niche and subtle that only true Final Fantasy XV devotees have caught it.

“I was wondering why the live-action Zelda looked so familiar, and it turns out that Bo Bragason was the 3D scan model and mocap actor for young Lunafreya in Kingsglaive FFXV!” one fan posted on Twitter.

From Lunafreya to Zelda: A Young Princess with More Screen Experience Than You’d Guess

According to Inkl, Bo Bragason actually appeared in Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV, the cinematic prequel to the iconic 2016 RPG. Her role was brief—just three minutes at the start of the film—but crucial: she provided the motion capture and facial performance for the younger version of Lunafreya, one of the saga’s main heroines.

Back then, Bragason was just twelve, already bringing princesses from fantastic worlds to life. Her name may not have made the credits in big letters, but now, as she steps into the Zelda universe, that early experience has a whole new significance. As Inkl notes, “There’s a world of difference between a motion capture cameo and starring in a major live-action blockbuster, but now you can wow your friends with this trivia tidbit.”

A Trilogy in the Making?

Bo Bragason was born in Chichester, England, in 2004, and began acting at a very young age. She lived in Luxembourg and the south of France before returning to the UK to join the National Youth Theatre and study at David Johnson Drama. Her film debut came in Hidden Love (2007), but her big break arrived with the BBC’s Three Girls (2017). Until now, her career has been steady but under the radar—2025, however, looks to be a game changer. With a string of new roles, Nintendo’s decision to cast her as Princess Zelda has instantly put her on the pop-culture map, and she’s set to become a household name in Nintendo’s new movie universe.

Bragason’s casting as Zelda—and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link—suggests a long game: Nintendo and Sony are clearly hoping for a trilogy if the first movie is a hit. Meanwhile, anyone who remembered young Lunafreya in Kingsglaive now has the ultimate fan brag: if you spotted it, you’re officially one of the world’s biggest Final Fantasy fans.
