The franchise is back with something new: not a game, but a massive, 616-page hardcover book containing the full scripts, bonus content, and never-before-seen artwork from both games. All details, price, and release date revealed!
Since its launch in 2013, The Last of Us saga has gripped millions and left a huge mark on the gaming industry. Since the second installment landed in 2020, the franchise has only expanded further—remakes, remasters, and a hit HBO series with two seasons under its belt.
But now, Naughty Dog has found a fresh way for fans to dive into the series’ legendary story. Instead of releasing another game, the studio is publishing the complete scripts from both games in a single, collectible hardcover volume titled ‘The Last of Us: Part I and Part II Scripts,’ spanning a whopping 616 pages.
This is a treasure for hardcore fans: it covers every detail from Joel, Ellie, and Abby’s journeys—including the Left Behind DLC script, rare concept art, and a foreword by Troy Baker (Joel’s voice actor). Dark Horse is the publisher, and the book reportedly features in-game dialogue, environmental chatter, and even every tossed bottle and infected encounter. Amazon confirms it will sell for €61.82 (expect similar in other regions) and releases on December 16, 2025.
Neil Druckmann, the series’ creator, told Variety these scripts “were never meant for the public,” but are now being released to give fans a deeper look into the minds and world of the main characters. Co-writer Halley Gross calls it a tribute to the “Naughty Dog team” that brought this universe to life. This release, alongside the Complete Edition for PS5, suggests Naughty Dog might be wrapping up the saga—at least for now.
“In its origins, The Last of Us was just a collection of philosophical themes—grief, unconditional love, the relentless pursuit of justice—waiting to become a story. These scripts, written during development, were there to guide our team as we built this world. They were never meant for the public—until now. For the first time, we’re sharing them with you, hoping this rare glimpse brings you even closer to the hearts of Joel, Ellie, Abby, and the world they live in.” – Neil Druckmann
It’s worth noting that Druckmann has stated there won’t be a third game unless a worthy story comes along. He’s stepped away from the HBO series to focus on Naughty Dog’s next big project, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, though the studio is also known to be working on another mystery title. For now, the next chapter fans can expect is in the TV series.
Season 3 of The Last of Us is set for 2027, with filming scheduled for next year and Abby’s arc taking the spotlight. Showrunner Craig Mazin originally planned four seasons, but HBO recently admitted that it might end up as three—with a longer third season to cover Abby’s story and the Santa Barbara events.
Meanwhile, you can check out the brand new “Chronological Mode” in The Last of Us: Part 2, released earlier this July. It lets players experience the entire story in order of events for the first time. The patch also adds two new skins for Joel and Tommy—Nathan and Sam Drake—in No Return mode, unlocked by beating the campaign in this mode.
