According to rumors, the French publisher canceled a sequel that would likely have been developed by Massive Entertainment, the team behind the original game.
This month, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot blamed the Star Wars IP for the weaker-than-expected sales of Star Wars Outlaws, stating that the brand was in a particularly tough spot. It’s not a huge surprise, then, that rumors have surfaced suggesting Ubisoft quietly canceled the sequel. This rumor comes from Tom Henderson of Insider-Gaming; on their podcast, they claimed that Ubisoft recently pulled the plug on Star Wars Outlaws 2, adding that the project was still in its very early stages and had not entered full development—meaning it was extremely early in the pipeline. Mike Straw, the website’s editor, joked that it probably would have taken another seven years for us to see it. Considering that both development costs and timelines in the AAA space are growing exponentially, it doesn’t seem like such a bad joke.
Henderson has previously reported accurately on Ubisoft’s internal matters, but for now, this remains a rumor—though it’s not wild speculation either. Star Wars Outlaws was perhaps Ubisoft’s biggest failure last year, and the French publisher had a string of unsuccessful moves in 2024. Sales were poor, and after a flood of negative user reviews, significant changes were made to the game (for example, Massive Entertainment made major adjustments to the stealth system, which we reported on at the time), and the game’s director admitted he was disappointed by press reviews. (The audience was disappointed with the game itself, so the feeling seems mutual, doesn’t it?)
Due to the weak sales of Star Wars Outlaws, the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows was postponed from 2024 and eventually launched this March. It’s fair to say that since Star Wars Outlaws was released, Ubisoft has made almost exclusively negative comments about the game.
