Is the True PlayStation Era Over? Sony’s Biggest Exclusives Are Heading Everywhere!

Could the era of PlayStation-dominating exclusives be coming to an end? A new Sony job posting signals that the next wave of blockbusters might not remain tied to PlayStation hardware forever.

While Nintendo’s hybrid console has taken the world by storm, the last generation saw fierce competition between Sony and Microsoft for the living room. Sony’s secret weapon: killer exclusives. Microsoft countered with a player-friendly subscription service, but the results speak for themselves: 115 million PS4s sold, compared to just 58 million Xboxes.

The real turning point came with the rise of digital libraries and social gaming, but PlayStation’s dominance was always underpinned by unforgettable titles like The Last of Us, God of War, Horizon, Uncharted, Spider-Man, and Ghost of Tsushima.

Global Strategy for PlayStation Studios: Beyond the Console

None of this is a surprise. Sony has been quick to bring its games to PC, Lego Horizon even launched on Switch, and CEO Hiroki Totoki has repeatedly hinted that the company needs to reach new platforms. Now, a recent job listing makes it official: the era of PlayStation-only exclusives is on the way out.

The listing is for a Senior Director of Cross-Platform and Account Management. Reporting directly to the VP, this person will “shape and execute the global business strategy for PlayStation Studios titles across all digital platforms beyond PlayStation hardware, including Steam, Epic Games, Xbox, Nintendo, and mobile.” No longer just Valve’s domain—Sony is looking everywhere.

The responsibilities include “optimizing the economic performance of titles” and, more importantly, “multiplatform expansion.” The role will oversee a dedicated team focused on this mission—driving long-term growth and reaching new audiences.

Will this mean simultaneous launches on all systems, like Xbox is increasingly doing, or even PlayStation games making the leap to Switch? One thing is certain: Sony’s next big move is clear, and its sights are set on every gaming screen possible.
