A New Era Dawns for Master Chief: Xbox Moves On from Halo Infinite – Is the Classic Returning?

Halo looks to the future! Xbox makes a momentous decision for the franchise, and fans are already thinking ahead to the next era of Master Chief. The official Halo esports event will be disassociated from Halo Infinite next year, and everything indicates that this decision is due to the arrival of a new title.

Halo isn’t just another video game series—it’s the very foundation of the Xbox brand. Built around the legendary Master Chief, the franchise has redefined generations of shooters and drawn millions of players thanks to its gameplay, narrative, and competitive scene. The Halo World Championship has brought together the world’s best, but after years of dedication to Halo Infinite, it’s finally time for a change.

Is a Halo CE Remake Coming in 2026?

The franchise’s flagship event, the Halo Championship Series (HCS), will retire Halo Infinite from official competition next year. This move has triggered immediate speculation about Master Chief’s future. According to Halo Studios, while two major Majors and a full Halo World Championship are still on tap for this year, “once a world champion is crowned in October, the HCS will retire Halo Infinite from official competition.”

The studio reassured fans that support for competitive tournaments will continue, but official competitions will now focus on the next chapter for Halo. Esports lead Tahir ‘Tashi’ Hasandjekic explained the decision: “the studio continued to move further and further into the next era of Halo.” Some link this to reports that Xbox is working on a Halo: Combat Evolved remaster or remake.

It’s also rumored that Microsoft may release this title for PlayStation 5. Xbox’s boss even hinted at “the return of a classic that has been with us since the beginning in 2026,” fueling speculation about a major comeback. However, Tashi clarified that while the studio is “fully focused on the future of Halo,” the official HCS competition will not return with a new title in 2026.

This doesn’t rule out a new Halo, but suggests that the next game may launch without competitive multiplayer. Last year, Halo Studios confirmed multiple new Halo projects are in the works in Unreal Engine 5, so there’s plenty of reason for fans to be excited.
