MOVIE NEWS – Rebecca Romijn, famous for her role as Mystique in the X-Men films, is ready to go blue again for the upcoming MCU sequel, Avengers: Doomsday. Fans are buzzing about her return alongside a lineup of former X-Men stars, but the actress’s latest update has left Marvel enthusiasts feeling uneasy.
At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Romijn was asked if she had wrapped filming her scenes for Avengers: Doomsday—her answer may surprise you, or maybe not, if you’re familiar with Marvel’s way of working. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Romijn revealed she couldn’t say if she’d finished filming… but not because it’s a secret. The real reason? The script isn’t even finished yet.
“[I’m] not quite sure. The script hasn’t—they haven’t finished writing it.”
Principal photography for Avengers: Doomsday began back in April, meaning the Marvel sequel has been shooting for months… even though the final script still isn’t ready. While this approach has been standard for Marvel since Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Favreau improvised their way through the first Iron Man, you’d think, with the MCU now facing a turbulent period among both critics and fans, that everything would be firmly in place for the next big blockbuster.
Since the release of Avengers: Endgame in 2019, the MCU’s popularity has taken a notable hit—even Kevin Feige has admitted it—so fans can’t help but feel uneasy that Doomsday’s production seems so chaotic that even the cast isn’t sure when they’re done filming.
“It Was Very Surreal to Be With My Old Cast as Well as a New Cast”
Romijn added that Marvel’s signature secrecy is still going strong, so it’s possible some parts of the script are being kept under wraps—even from the actors themselves. She couldn’t reveal who she’d shared scenes with in Avengers: Doomsday, but described the experience of reuniting with the X-Men cast as nothing short of surreal.
“It was very surreal to be with my old cast as well as a new cast. I had crazy dreams while I was there for a large chunk of shooting. Like, really kind of regressive dreams. It was very strange, my brain was really trying to organize. Like, wow, this is a character I played 25 years ago, 20 years ago. Yeah, [it was] very surreal.”
It’s been over a decade since Romijn last played Mystique (her last appearance was a cameo in 2011’s X-Men: First Class). She shared what it’s like to return to the character after so many years, and how different it feels now compared to when she first got the role and to sharing the screen with a whole new generation of comic book heroes.
“Oh, I know her very well. I went back in with full ownership of her. It was very nice to go back and play that character, ‘cause I had imposter syndrome in the very beginning. I thought, maybe at the very beginning, I was just cast because I happened to be the model who was available to play Mystique at that moment. I mean, I auditioned and I got the role, because when you’re very young, you’re like, Do I deserve to be here? And I did not have that going back this time. It was a very different experience.”
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters December 18, 2026, as part of Phase Six of the MCU, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027.
