HANDHELD NEWS – The GPD Win 5 will be the first handheld PC to feature AMD’s most powerful APU designed for these platforms, the Ryzen AI Max+ 395. The upcoming GPD Win 5 is already one of the most popular handheld PCs because it’s among the first to use Strix Halo. GPD chose the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395, a flagship 16-core/32-thread Zen 5 CPU, and thanks to the Radeon 8060S, it delivers outstanding performance among integrated GPUs. The Radeon 8060S has already been tested in various systems and has shown competitive performance compared to cheaper graphics cards like the GeForce RTX 4060. Despite its 70W max TDP limit, the Ryzen AI Max+ 395’s performance comes close to the RTX 4060.
The CPU has been tested in various applications, including Cinebench R23, 3DMark, FireStrike, and Time Spy, delivering impressive results. In CPU-Z, the chip scored 7,710 points single-core and 12,678 multi-core. In Cinebench R23, the 16 Zen 5 cores reached 30,495 points. In Time Spy Graphics, the Radeon 8060S hit 9,680 points—about 15% lower than the RTX 4060’s 11,413 points. At full power, the Radeon 8060S delivers roughly the same performance as an RTX 4060, but the 70W cap still lets the iGPU achieve enough performance for modern games at 1080p ultra settings.
The handheld does heat up under load, reaching 70-80°C during gameplay—no surprise given the small chassis and cooling. Note that Ayaneo has announced the Next 2, which will be even more powerful with a dual-fan configuration and built-in capacity, while the GPD Win 5 requires an external battery pack (easily attachable to the back, 5,170 mAh). This makes the GPD device bulkier, but it’s convenient for those wanting longer battery life while gaming. The power supply is rated at 180W.
On the back of the handheld are two large fans that push air out of the case. The rear vent gets covered when the battery pack is attached, but there are additional vents on the top and bottom. The Win 5 features a 7″ (17.78 cm) 120 Hz panel and weighs 570g, with the battery adding another 340g. The handheld ships with a docking station that includes a USB Type-C port, HDMI, three USB Type-A ports, and Ethernet.
The GPD Win 5 will be available in two configurations: one with the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor and at least 64GB of memory, and another with a Ryzen AI Max 385. It will be interesting to see how the Next 2 performs, as it may have a higher TDP range than the GPD Win 5.
