“They did the right thing,” said Neil Newbon, the actor behind Astarion, when asked about Larian’s decision on Baldur’s Gate 4. Newbon says he’d be excited to meet whoever takes over the iconic RPG series from the European studio.
When Baldur’s Gate 3 launched nearly two years ago, it was clear the game would leave a powerful mark on the industry and mean a lot to RPG fans. What no one could have predicted was just how deeply it would become embedded in players’ collective memory—or how it would elevate Larian Studios into the global elite of game developers.
Alongside that success, its actors and characters have become household names—especially Neil Newbon and his now-legendary Astarion. We’ve recently seen Newbon in Dead Take, and he’s appeared in interviews for outlets like Arcade Hang and Radio Times Gaming.
Asked about Baldur’s Gate and Larian’s choice not to continue the Dungeons & Dragons franchise, Newbon replied: “I love that when Larian realized their hearts weren’t in making another game—or even DLC—when they knew this was the definitive experience and it took eight years, when they were exhausted, burnt out, happy, and everything else, they just said, ‘That’s it.’”
Newbon didn’t stop there: “I respect that they stuck to their convictions and understood they wouldn’t be able to match what they’d already achieved, since their hearts wanted to move on. I think it was absolutely the right decision.”
When asked who might be able to make a potential Baldur’s Gate 4, Newbon answered: “I don’t know who would be right for it. I’m genuinely curious to see who could pull off a fourth entry… and what they’ll do with it, because you don’t necessarily want a carbon copy of Baldur’s Gate 3.”
