MOVIE NEWS – After the surprise success of Nobody in 2021, the question was whether the sequel could offer anything new, since our hero and his elderly father would clearly be taking on the local mob again. Let’s hand the mic to Bob Odenkirk, who plays Hutch Mansell: “A lot of directors avoid sequels because the first movie already set the course, and there’s not much room to stray from it. But Nobody 2 is directed by Timo Tjahjanto, which guarantees this film is bolder and much more brutal than the first. There’s way more action, more bullets, more pyrotechnics, but there’s also an old-school charm, since we’re following a retired killer who’s no Spider-Man anymore.”
Timo Tjahjanto, who got his start in Indonesia, made his mark with the now-classic action movie The Night Comes for Us, which also opened the doors to Hollywood for him. No surprise that he was trusted with Nobody 2, though he humbly cites another Indonesian classic, The Raid, as his main inspiration.
“We set out to make a breezy, family-centered summer adventure where our hero takes his loved ones to a popular vacation spot,” Tjahjanto says. “That sets the tone—we perform on a scale from playful to brutal. We took our pacing cues from The Raid, which gave the genre an incredible sense of momentum, so much so that Hollywood is starting to adopt it. We often use long takes where you can see the actors sometimes mess up, but that’s not a problem—in fact, it’s the point. You can’t always be elegant and poised; life isn’t like that. Even the best cage fighters mess up big time, and that’s what makes this world beautiful.”
