NetherRealm Studios will continue to fine-tune its game to make it the most balanced installment in the franchise’s history.
Since its September 2023 release, Mortal Kombat 1 has sold over 6.2 million copies, surpassing the 5 million milestone announced in January. The news came from game director Ed Boon on Twitter, who also pledged that the studio remains committed to making this the most balanced title NetherRealm has ever created. To this end, a new Mortal Kombat 1 hotfix has been rolled out, featuring multiple adjustments to playable fighters.
“With over 6.2 million games sold, we’re still committed to refining Mortal Kombat 1 to make it our most balanced game yet. But we still want to hear from you. Which four fighters do you think need the most and least buffs? Mortal Kombat 11 had 12 DLC fighters split into three Kombat Packs (six in Kombat Pack 1, then three each in the Aftermath and Ultimate expansions). Mortal Kombat 1 had 12 DLC fighters split into two Kombat Packs (+6 in each). While there are many factors involved in how we release DLC fighters, what would be your preferred way to see future NetherRealm DLC fighters released?” Boon wrote.
Mortal Kombat 1 received strong reviews, but its sales trail far behind its predecessor, Mortal Kombat 11, which reached 15 million copies sold by October 2022—about three and a half years after launch. While Mortal Kombat 1 still has a year and a half ahead, it’s unlikely to sell another 8.8 million units, even with significant discounts.
Perhaps Warner should recognize that the PC market shouldn’t be neglected. Although the game is available on PC, the use of Denuvo DRM has turned many potential buyers away.
