MOVIE NEWS – Terminator fans hoping for a return to the big screen will have to wait much longer. James Cameron has admitted that while he still intends to make another installment, he hasn’t written a single page yet. The director says he’s out of ideas, and in today’s world, reality itself feels far more terrifying than anything science fiction could conjure.
Only a year ago, James Cameron surprised audiences by revealing he had a new Terminator project in the works. This was unexpected, given that Terminator: Dark Fate was both a commercial and critical disappointment – Cameron himself called it “the movie in the series your grandfather would want to see.” Even so, since the franchise is his creation, it was understandable that he wanted to revive it. However, just days ago, the director shared an update that doesn’t bode well for fans.
Writing Sci-Fi Is Hard These Days, Says the Director
In an interview with CNN, Cameron confessed: “I’m currently at a point where I’m struggling to write science fiction. I’ve been tasked with writing a new Terminator story, but I haven’t made much progress because I don’t know what to say that won’t be surpassed by reality.” He elaborated: “We’re living in a science fiction era right now, and the only way forward is to keep going with our intelligence, our curiosity, our mastery of technology, but also by truly understanding the serious threats we face.”
In short, Cameron has no revolutionary ideas that would feel fresh in today’s context – and it’s easy to see why. As he notes, what terrified audiences 40 years ago now feels dangerously close to reality. The True Lies director recently warned once again about the risks of putting defense systems – including nuclear arsenals – in the hands of artificial intelligence: “Look, I think there’s still a danger of a Terminator-style apocalypse, where you combine artificial intelligence with weapons systems, even nuclear weapons systems, nuclear defense systems, counterattack systems — all of that. Because the theater of operations is so fast-paced and the decision windows are so fleeting, it would take a superintelligence to be able to process it. Maybe we’re smart enough to keep a human in the process, overseeing, but humans are fallible, and there have been plenty of mistakes that have brought us to the brink of international incidents that could have escalated into nuclear war. I don’t know. I feel like we’re at a crucial point in human development where we have all three existential threats: climate change and our general degradation of the natural world, nuclear weapons, and superintelligence. They’re all manifesting and peaking at the same time.” – James Cameron (via Rolling Stone)
It’s hard to believe that after such statements, no idea for a theatrical reboot of Terminator or something similar could emerge. Perhaps the real issue is that the franchise needs a rest, and Cameron should focus on creating a new series that addresses his present-day concerns – with a new setting and protagonist. However, that would mean setting aside the Avatar universe, which is unlikely for at least six more years due to two other projects: an adaptation of Last Train From Hiroshima and a film based on Abercrombie’s Devils.
