Beyond Good and Evil 2 – Could a Controversial Tool Be Behind Its Long-Awaited Return?

Rumors suggest that Beyond Good and Evil 2, nearly two decades in the making, may be tapping into Generative AI to help push its troubled development forward. While Ubisoft has yet to officially confirm the use of this technology for the sequel, a well-known industry insider claims it may already be part of the process.

First unveiled in 2008, Beyond Good and Evil 2 quickly fell into years of silence as it languished in “development hell.” The game resurfaced at E3 2017 with an official announcement for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, followed by a new trailer at E3 2018. However, no fresh gameplay footage has been shown since. In 2023, the project suffered a major blow when its creative director, Emile Morel, passed away at the age of 40.

Ubisoft Could Be Using Generative AI in the Development of Beyond Good and Evil 2

Although Ubisoft insists the game is still in active development at its Montpellier studio in France, reports point to the involvement of a controversial tool. According to ComicBook, industry leaker Nash Weedle claims that specialists in Generative AI for creating NPCs have joined the project. Weedle further stated that development was paused in early 2025, with even a potential name change being considered. He also revealed that a fully prepared story trailer was never released.

Since Ubisoft has not officially acknowledged the use of Generative AI in Beyond Good and Evil 2, these claims should be treated with caution. Nevertheless, the adoption of such technology has sparked significant debate across the gaming industry. Concerns over AI replacing human developers in coding and art tasks have led some studios and modders to embrace the “No Gen AI Seal,” modeled after Nintendo’s iconic Seal of Quality.

With Steam now requiring disclosure of any Generative AI usage, it has been revealed that at least 7% of its game library employs the technology. Time will tell if Beyond Good and Evil 2 officially joins those ranks.
