Michael Pachter Criticizes Sony: “They Have Lost Their Way!” [VIDEO]

The renowned Wedbush Securities analyst also made a statement about Fairgame$, which he later had to clarify.

Michael Pachter, in the latest episode of the Pachter Factor podcast, discussed Sony’s shift toward live service games and criticized the company for several missteps, such as acquiring Bungie. According to Pachter, Sony paid far more than Bungie was worth. He also remarked that Jade Raymond was fired and her game, Fairgame$, was canceled. We’ll revisit this later, but first, let’s see what he said:

“Sony said, ‘We need some of that,’ and bought Bungie. Bungie made Halo. They’re very talented. They made Destiny, which was good and had ongoing spending. But Sony paid $3.6 billion. They didn’t buy a mobile publisher like Scopely, acquired for $4.9 billion with $3–3.5 billion in revenue. Bungie makes $300 million. They didn’t buy Niantic, with $1.5 billion in revenue. They didn’t hire people who know how to make live service games. Instead, they turned all their console developers into live service developers. This led to the shutdown of Concord and the studio. This led to Jade Raymond being let go and Fairgame$ being canceled,” said Pachter.

Raymond founded Haven in 2021, and her departure was announced in May. At the time, the only official information was that Fairgame$ had been delayed until 2026. Marketed as a competitive heist experience, the game was in development for PlayStation 5 and PC. If canceled, it would be another serious blow to Sony’s live service strategy after the cancellations of Concord and The Last of Us Online. Pachter then directly attacked Sony, saying they had lost their way and no longer knew what they were doing:

“They are bad managers. They don’t know what they’re doing. They should stick to what they’re good at and buy what they’re not. And if you’re buying what you’re not good at, it’s not Bungie, because Bungie makes console games. Sony’s good at that. Buy King, Zynga, Supercell, Peak Games—someone who knows how to make free-to-play live service games. Buy Respawn. We didn’t know Vince Zampella could do it, but he did. But no, I think Sony has lost its way,” Pachter added.

Returning to Fairgame$: Pachter later clarified that he had spoken in error. According to former IGN editor Destin Legarie, Pachter admitted he had assumed the game was canceled after Jade Raymond’s departure, but in fact, he has no information on the game at all. His criticism of Sony, however, still stands.
