Right now, only Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can access cloud gaming (formerly xCloud) — but that may change.
Jason Ronald, Microsoft’s VP of next-gen experiences, hinted that a lower-cost access option may be coming for Xbox Cloud Gaming. On the official Xbox podcast, Ronald and Jason Beaumont (VP of Xbox Experiences) discussed Cloud Gaming and the company’s future investments. Beaumont said the goal is simple: bring more games to more people, which means expanding the service to more countries and more devices.
“Many players use Game Pass Ultimate to access the cloud, whether as their primary way to play or as an on-the-go option. For us, that opens the door to make it more affordable and more accessible — whether that’s new regions or new ways to access the cloud,” Ronald noted.
He did not confirm a cloud-only Game Pass tier, but such a plan would be the obvious path to making Xbox Cloud Gaming cheaper, relying on cloud access rather than native downloads.
We may hear more on Gamescom Opening Night. Microsoft has confirmed it will feature at the show; the Xbox ROG Ally handheld from Asus (with Xbox branding) is set for a deeper reveal, including European pricing and availability.
