Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was undoubtedly the biggest surprise of 2025, so it’s no wonder that it’s becoming a franchise.

The debut game from French developer Sandfall Interactive was so successful that the release of the highly anticipated The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered didn’t hurt its success. Now that awards season is approaching, the general consensus is that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has a very good chance of winning Game of the Year. We wouldn’t be surprised if it wins at The Game Awards in December.

Guillaume Broche’s story is now well known. Broche previously worked for Ubisoft but left the French company led by Yves Guillemot to pursue his passion. Of course, this doesn’t mean there’s nothing left to ask the JRPG creator. YouTuber MrMattyPlays recently posted a long interview with Broche, who confirmed that Expedition 33 is the first in a series of games.

He said that Clair Obscur is the name of the franchise. Expedition 33 is one of the stories they want to tell in the franchise. It’s too early to announce the exact concept, but it’s certain that this is not the end of the Clair Obscur franchise. Fans believe that Sandfall is leaning toward an anthology series rather than direct sequels. After all, the IP was inspired by Square Enix’s Final Fantasy, and we previously reported that the French team visited Square Enix to brainstorm creative ideas.

While we wait to see what form future Clair Obscur installments will take, Broche has already hinted at post-launch content for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, saying that there may already be something in the works. We’ll just have to wait a little longer.
