The cancellation of Perfect Dark has triggered fresh layoffs at Crystal Dynamics. The studio insists, however, that the decision does not affect the upcoming Tomb Raider installment.
The shockwaves from Microsoft’s latest wave of job cuts continue to reverberate across the gaming industry. It has now come to light that the sudden cancellation of Perfect Dark has also impacted Crystal Dynamics, which was collaborating on the project alongside the now-defunct The Initiative. The studio has confirmed a new round of layoffs, although it did not disclose the number of employees affected.
In a statement shared on LinkedIn, Crystal Dynamics explained that the decision was “a result of evolving business conditions” and intended to secure “the long-term health of our studio and our creative priorities in a constantly changing marketplace.” The company added that those laid off would receive resources and assistance to help with their transition during this period.
Although Crystal Dynamics did not explicitly mention Perfect Dark in its official message, posts from former employees such as Maja Öberg indicate that the layoffs primarily affected staff involved with that project. The studio further clarified that these cuts have no impact on the ongoing development of the next Tomb Raider title.
