TECH NEWS – Everything may be about to change for AMD and its FSR technology. Modders have built a tool that enables the feature even in games that don’t officially support it. With AMD and developers slow to integrate FSR 4, the community is now swapping it in for Nvidia’s DLSS.
The battle between AMD and Nvidia to win over developers has taken a strange turn for players since the introduction of “super sampling” technologies. While Nvidia, led by Jen-Hsun Huang, generally holds the upper hand over AMD’s “Team Red,” the latter continues to push its FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) as a counter to Nvidia’s DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling). The problem is that most games only offer one of these options — and almost always, it’s Nvidia’s.
That has been a major disadvantage for AMD GPU owners, who often couldn’t use FSR in their games… or could they? Players have discovered that even though many titles don’t list FSR as supported, some can actually run the new FSR 4 if key files are swapped. Rather than waiting on AMD and studios to add it, the community has released a tool that literally replaces Nvidia’s DLSS with AMD’s FSR whenever older versions of the tech are supported. The tool is called DLSS Swapper.
AMD’s “Hidden” Option Unlocked by Modders
Since its 2021 debut—two years after DLSS—FSR has been gaining ground, but plenty of big games still don’t offer it, or not in a fully visible or functional way. In reality, many of these titles could run FSR on an AMD card even if the settings don’t make it obvious. Modders noticed this potential, and one of them created a tool to make it happen.
According to Techspot, user “beeradmoore” has shared a mod on Github that allows players to manually switch the DLSS upscaling option to FSR 4, dubbed DLSS Swapper. It works in games that don’t “officially” support AMD’s latest technology but can run it by replacing DLL files with updated versions. One tested title is the PC version of Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, which, while not bug-free when using this method, proves that more games are compatible with FSR than initially thought. At present, it only works with Radeon RX 9000 series cards, but the project’s X account suggests broader compatibility may be coming.
Other Compatibility Efforts
Right now, only a few dozen games natively support FSR, compared to hundreds that work with Nvidia’s DLSS 4. This isn’t the first time modders have tried to bridge the gap, however. Previously, modders “FakeMichau” and “TheRazerMD” created OptiScaler, a similar tool that’s less refined but works up to DLSS and FSR version 2.0. It also supports Intel’s XeSS and works with a wider variety of hardware, including Intel Arc, RTX, and RX 7000 GPUs.
These community experiments with third-party tools benefit everyone: players, because they can use the GPU features they prefer; and developers, because it highlights demand and ensures that neither manufacturer overlooks titles.
