According to a leak, one of Sony’s next-generation hardware devices won’t be so expensive that the average consumer couldn’t afford it.

Although Sony has not yet confirmed the development or release date, it’s safe to assume that the PlayStation 6 is already in the works. Given that software and hardware prices have risen in recent years — hardware more than once — it’s no surprise that potential buyers are concerned about how much the PlayStation 6 will cost. But perhaps there’s no need to worry. A recently leaked report suggests that Sony is developing a PlayStation 6 similar to the Xbox Series S, which is expected to arrive with a more affordable price tag.

This was discussed in the latest video by Moore’s Law Is Dead, a seemingly reliable insider. According to him, Sony is working not only on the base model of the PS6 and the handheld that recently surfaced in the news, but also on a version that would serve as Sony’s equivalent of the Xbox Series S. Currently referred to as the PS6 S Canis console, it will reportedly feature a Canis chip and RAM. Since this is only a rumor, no additional details are available about the PlayStation 6 S.

It’s reasonable to assume that this model will be slightly smaller and less powerful than the base PlayStation 6, justifying the lower price. However, when the news of its possible existence appeared on Reddit, fans were divided. Some argued that Sony was overcomplicating things with three hardware models (base model, smaller model, and handheld). Others questioned the need for the PS6 S if the handheld will be dockable. Still, some believed Sony hasn’t learned from Xbox’s missteps, and that building future exclusives around a handheld and a weaker, cheaper console could hold back the PS6’s full potential.
