Layoffs at Sid Meier’s Civilization Franchise Developers Too!

Another studio has been forced to trim staff: this time, the guillotine has fallen on Firaxis Games.

Firaxis Games, owned by Take-Two’s 2K label, has conducted layoffs. While 2K didn’t disclose a headcount, industry reporting indicates dozens of employees were affected as part of a restructuring billed as improving “adaptability, collaboration, and creativity.”

Those posting publicly include writer Emma Kidwell (Civilization VII, Marvel’s Midnight Suns), lead character artist Matthew Davis, and QA specialist Logan Blackwood, among others who shared on LinkedIn that they’re now seeking roles.

Firaxis is the latest Take-Two studio hit by cuts. In August, Cloud Chamber—the long-running BioShock 4 team—laid off around 80 developers amid a major reorg to get the sequel back on track after years of turbulence.

Meanwhile, parent-company prospects remain robust: Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto VI is slated for May 26, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series, a launch expected to generate substantial revenue. The open question is how much of that windfall will ultimately support and stabilize development teams.

Anikó, our news editor and communication manager, is more interested in the business side of the gaming industry. She worked at banks, and she has a vast knowledge of business life. Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
