Wolfenstein fans aren’t the only ones hoping for a third chapter. Beyond the spin-offs, MachineGames has always viewed the saga as a “trilogy.”
MachineGames has recently been in the spotlight thanks to the new Indiana Jones and the Great Circle DLC, The Order of the Giants. Still, the studio hasn’t forgotten its acclaimed Wolfenstein series and revealed it still feels unfinished: the story they started hasn’t reached its conclusion. Setting aside spin-offs, MachineGames has always envisioned the saga as a trilogy, with Wolfenstein 3 as the long-silent missing piece.
The detail surfaced in a 44-minute Noclip documentary (via GamesRadar+) that dives into the making of the Wolfenstein saga. “The first game was very much about BJ,” said Jerk Gustafsson, head of MachineGames. “He realizes the Nazis won the war, but it’s also a personal journey. Along the way, he meets Anya and begins to see that more is at stake than simply fighting Nazis. By the time of New Colossus, you’re surrounded by a broader resistance, something bigger, something that resembles a family. Meanwhile, BJ is preparing to start his own family.”
“We Always Saw It as a Trilogy”
Gustafsson added: “I think it’s important to say we always viewed this as a trilogy.” In fact, the team had been considering the third entry while designing what became The New Order: “We had a plan for that character — what would happen in the second game, and what would happen in the third. I think it’s important to say this, because at least I hope we’re not done with Wolfenstein yet. We still have a story to tell.”
This marks the first time in years the studio has openly, if indirectly, addressed Wolfenstein 3. Officially announced in 2018, both MachineGames and Bethesda have remained tight-lipped about its progress ever since. Fans have been waiting eagerly for news, and now, with Indiana Jones and the Great Circle wrapped, the team may finally be ready to return full force to completing BJ Blazkowicz’s saga.
