Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra: Weaker Telephoto Sensor in the Camera?

TECH NEWS – Rumor has it that the South Korean company’s 2026 flagship phone will not have as powerful a telephoto sensor as this year’s model.

The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra generated significant buzz even before launch, thanks to the expected upgrades to its main and telephoto lenses. However, not all developments are going as planned. According to insider PhoneArt/Ice Universe, one of the model’s biggest selling points—the triple zoom camera—might be downgraded. Earlier rumors suggested that Samsung would upgrade the 3x telephoto lens to a 12 MP sensor to enhance close-up shots and low-light performance. Now, however, reports suggest that the resolution will be reduced to 10 MP. The telephoto zoom camera is expected to feature an f/2.4 aperture, a 1/3.94-inch sensor, and 1.0 μm pixel size.

While this downgrade would not represent a massive step back compared to the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s telephoto lens, it could still affect image quality—particularly when detailed shots in low-light conditions are needed. The rumor sparked considerable discussion, as the Ultra series has built its reputation on versatility and camera excellence, making this a potential disappointment for photography enthusiasts. On the other hand, the overall camera system could still see significant improvements. The main 200 MP sensor will likely feature a wider f/1.4 aperture, allowing nearly 50% more light, while the 50 MP 5x zoom lens is expected to use an f/2.9 aperture, providing 38% more light intake.

If these changes are realized, the Galaxy S26 Ultra will remain a formidable competitor in smartphone photography, capable of producing sharp and high-quality images even in difficult lighting conditions. Still, the leak serves as a reminder that not all rumors point toward upgrades—sometimes they suggest compromises. Some may see this as Samsung taking a step backward.
