The Latest Version of AMD’s Upscaler Now Works on Steam Deck! [VIDEO]

HANDHELD NEWS – AMD FSR 4 is now available on Valve’s handheld PC, and a demo summarizes how it works.

AMD FSR 4 now works with certain Steam Deck games, notably improving the image quality in Cyberpunk 2077 and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The video below, courtesy of Deck Wizard, demonstrates this. It shows, step by step, how to install AMD FSR 4 on the Steam Deck and use it in the aforementioned games (both of which support the new version of the upscaler).

Although performance is not yet optimal in the current early stages, the installation process is relatively simple and well worth the small effort. In Cyberpunk 2077, using AMD FSR 4 results in a cleaner, sharper image compared to previous versions, with better detail for distant elements (e.g., buildings). The new version of the upscaler delivers similarly impressive results in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 with a relatively small impact on performance.

AMD FSR 4 officially only supports RDNA 4 GPUs (AMD Radeon RX 9000 cards), but there are solutions to run the upscaler on devices with earlier architectures. These include the Steam Deck and RDNA 3 architecture graphics cards, such as the AMD Radeon RX 7800. Even without the necessary hardware, AMD FSR 4 appears to reliably deliver results in various situations, enabling owners of older devices to enhance the image quality and performance of games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which has sold over 4 million copies.

The numerous visual and performance improvements offered by AMD FSR 4 in supported games may soon be available on the PlayStation 5 Pro with a new version of the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaler. Rumor has it that the new PSSR version will be released early next year, and we have reported on this in more detail.
