TECH NEWS – In a recent test, the thinnest model in the fall iPhone lineup suffered a crushing defeat in terms of battery life.
As people increasingly rely on their phones for work and everyday communication, battery life has become one of the most important factors in deciding which model to buy. In light of this, the difference in battery life between the iPhone 17 Pro Max and the iPhone Air is quite interesting and may help you decide which model to buy. Tom’s Guide’s iPhone 17 battery test finally reveals if the iPhone Air can handle a full day of everyday tasks.
All models were tested with continuous 5G internet browsing at 150 nits brightness, and the results clearly show how each model compares to the others. The iPhone 17 Pro Max lasted until 5:54 p.m., which is understandable given the size of its battery. Following it are the iPhone 17 Pro (15:32), the base model (12:47), and the iPhone Air (12:02) at the bottom of the list.
These results are surprising, as the iPhone 17 Pro Max lasted one and a half times longer than the iPhone Air, meaning it had approximately 48% greater durability in this controlled test. As expected, the iPhone Air’s results are in line with its design, as the device is extremely portable and thin, naturally limiting the size of the battery. In contrast, the iPhone 17 Pro Max has more physical space for a larger battery, enabling much longer use between charges. For those who spend most of their time away from power outlets, this difference could be a deciding factor when choosing a model.
Apple’s estimates for offline video playback also show similar results: the iPhone Air is rated at 27 hours, the iPhone 17 at 30 hours, the iPhone 17 Pro at 33 hours, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max at 39 hours. These figures closely match the results of Tom’s Guide’s real-world tests. Interestingly, the iPhone Air’s battery life is sufficient for most casual users, lasting a whole day on a single charge.
However, those who play games or stream for extended periods should opt for the Pro Max. It’s also worth buying a battery case to complement its slim form factor.
