Telltale is not the company it once was, and The Wolf Among Us 2 is nowhere to be found. It could have been something special, though.
It’s no exaggeration to say that The Wolf Among Us 2 experienced every hell imaginable in the development process. There was a time when we thought the game would never be released, especially after Telltale famously went bankrupt and closed its doors. Then, the studio was revived, hope for new Telltale titles returned, and development of The Wolf Among Us 2 restarted. However, that was five years ago. Three years ago, we heard that the game would be released in 2023. That release date was postponed, and since then, we’ve only received a few screenshots and Telltale’s assurance that the game is still in development.
The process took much longer than anyone could have imagined. Former Telltale writer Nick Herman left the studio long ago to co-found AdHoc. The team will release its latest title, Dispatch, in October. Herman shed some light on what happened with the game’s protracted development. In an interview with Eurogamer, Herman explained why AdHoc stopped developing The Wolf Among Us 2 to focus on Dispatch. Herman also made a potentially reassuring comment, saying he believes the game they wrote was better than the first one and that, if it ever reached players, they would love it.
“We wrote Season Two. We think it’s better than Season One, and we were involved with that one too. We’re really proud of it. We did tests. We worked on cinematics, animation, and so on. Then, basically, they needed more time. We weren’t running the project. We were doing it in partnership with Telltale. We couldn’t wait around, so we moved on to Dispatch to keep the studio going. They needed to go their own way. We’re looking forward to seeing what they do with it. I don’t know how much of our script will make it into their final product. If one day we were able to make what we wrote and were directing, we think people would love it. So, you know, good luck,” said Herman.
Currently, only those working at Telltale know what’s happening with the studio and the development of The Wolf Among Us 2.
