Kojima’s OD Brings Back the Terrifying Spirit of PT With a Shocking First Trailer [VIDEO]

Hideo Kojima has finally lifted the curtain on OD with its first in-engine trailer, and the resemblance to his canceled Konami project is unmistakable. PT returns in the form of a first-person experience, hyperreal visuals, and a horrifying monster that lurks in the shadows.

A long-standing promise has now been fulfilled by Hideo Kojima. To mark the tenth anniversary of Kojima Productions, the Japanese auteur used the occasion to showcase more of his upcoming projects after Death Stranding 2—and that’s exactly what fans received. The event, called Beyond the Strand, held in Japan with guests such as Guillermo del Toro and George Miller, became the stage where Kojima finally unveiled OD.

This Xbox-exclusive project features creative collaboration with Jordan Peele, as well as a cast of familiar faces including Hunter Schafer and Udo Kier. It marks Kojima’s long-awaited entry into horror, after the disappointment of Silent Hills being canceled and the bittersweet memory left behind by PT. Alongside Microsoft Gaming chief Phil Spencer, the crowd was treated to the very first look at its trailer.

The footage revealed OD’s impressive level of graphical realism, powered by Unreal Engine. In one scene, the protagonist enters a room and begins lighting candles, only to stir the attention of a monstrous presence. As the camera pans back, we see Sophia Lillis, paralyzed with fear, before enormous hands close in to strike.

A Hyperreal Nightmare Reborn

The title clearly channels the essence of PT, confining players to a hyperrealistic, claustrophobic space where the main objective appears to be surviving an unstoppable pursuer. The opening lines even reference an event that happened a decade ago—the same period when Playable Teaser first shook the gaming world. Despite this, no release window has yet been provided.

Phil Spencer addressed the audience, stating: “At Xbox, we empower creators to push the boundaries. OD was one of those opportunities, one to support something completely visionary. Kojima is innovating in gameplay, story, and player agency. We’re collaborating very closely, and we’re very excited about what’s next.”

Kojima added: “With this game, I’m not creating something that’s already out there, like stealth or action. I want to go beyond the systems of video games and movies. I can’t give any more details yet because we’re in development, but I will show you some footage created with Unreal Engine […] It’s scary, but let’s take a look at the video.”
