[SOP 2025] Returnal’s Successor? Saros Reveals Its Merciless Gameplay [VIDEO]

The first big PS5 exclusive of 2026 is a high-octane sci-fi action experience where a single foe can unleash a storm of bullets that engulfs the entire screen. And it looks absolutely stunning. Saros finally steps into the spotlight with gameplay reminiscent of Returnal — and a confirmed launch date.

While Returnal remains Housemarque’s most celebrated title to date, the Finnish studio has been delivering pulse-pounding arcade shooters for decades — and they’re back at it again with Saros. The new project stole the show at PlayStation’s State of Play during the Tokyo Game Show 2025, not only debuting an extended gameplay demo but also locking in its official release date: March 20, 2026, exclusively on PlayStation 5.

According to the studio, “Saros builds upon the foundation of the award-winning Returnal” and promises “an electrifying and emotionally gripping narrative” set in a richly imagined sci-fi universe. Starring British actor Rahul Kohli, the game is defined by its frantic pacing, chaotic explosions, and relentless bullet storms that highlight its unapologetic “bullet hell” identity — all wrapped in next-gen visuals and cinematic flair.

Returnal Reimagined

The new gameplay reveal offered a deep look into Saros’ mechanics. The protagonist wields a defensive shield that not only blocks incoming attacks but also absorbs enemy fire, storing its energy to unleash devastating blasts capable of obliterating waves of foes in seconds.

Agility is everything here. Dodging plays a crucial role in survival as the pace rarely slows — the screen is often filled with an overwhelming barrage of projectiles. Alongside intense gunplay, players can also execute powerful melee attacks, adding depth and variety to the relentless combat loop.

The showcase concluded with the reveal of a jaw-dropping final boss, boasting a striking design that pushed the spectacle even further. A cinematic trailer followed, showcasing a range of breathtaking environments — a dramatic shift from the single eclipse-lit landscape shown so far.
