Call of Duty Burnout? Treyarch Fears Black Ops 7 Might Push Players Too Far

Activision and Treyarch are worried that Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 could oversaturate the franchise, as two consecutive entries in the same sub-series may cause player fatigue — but they claim to have a plan.

Many fans are already growing weary of Call of Duty’s annual releases, but what’s even more surprising is that two consecutive installments are coming from the same sub-series — in this case, Black Ops. With just over a month left until the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, players will soon get the chance to try it during two planned beta tests. Yet many are still actively playing Black Ops 6, raising concerns that the new title might overwhelm the fanbase too quickly.

This concern was echoed by Yale Miller, senior director of production at Treyarch, in an interview with CharlieIntel. Miller admitted that the team is “definitely concerned” about potential burnout, as Black Ops 7 is releasing just a year after its predecessor. He recalled a similar situation with Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3 and revealed that the studio’s plan to fight fatigue involves “bringing everything” to the seasonal content — more maps, weekly challenges, and deeper progression systems.

“I think the honest answer is yes. It worries me. Obviously, there was a plan for the two Modern Warfare games and then this one. We’ll see where the franchise goes from here,” Miller said. Beyond that, Treyarch and Raven Software aim to reduce burnout with a robust campaign, a multiplayer mode that meets expectations, and a revamped Zombies mode — complete with the return of Tranzit. Players will get to test the latter two features in the upcoming beta phases.

Black Ops 7 release date and beta access

The full version of Black Ops 7 is set to launch on November 14 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. However, players can try the game earlier through two beta sessions. The first, a multiplayer beta for pre-order customers and Xbox Game Pass subscribers, runs from October 2 to 5. Then, from October 5 to 8, the open beta will be available, featuring both multiplayer and Zombies modes, including the Ashes of the Damned map.
